The scalability of a profitable business

Some journeys are special. The journey from running one store to 10 stores. The journey from hiring 10 employees to 100 employees. The journey from one successful product to 100 successful products. Overall the journey from a profitable company to a scalable company is highly enthralling but less travelled. The ability to scale one’s successful business to unforseen heights is rarely found. We find so many single successful business person who got attached so much with their own single unit businesses that they lose their ability to delegate and thus focus their energy on new ventures. Some others got so much satisfied with their one success that they never think of replicating it and thus passing the buck to other smart businessmen. Many are engaged in highly competitive markets and thus their ability to scale is limited. Thats the reason that we find that number of companies with turn over in the range of 10 million dollar are in multiples of companies with turnover above 20 million dollars. There are many factors that impact the scalability of a business like ability, industry, mindset, ability to delegate, process driven etc.

The most important among all is the mindset and mental vision of that set of people who have made the business profitable. But today when a person earns substantial money by his long struggle of establishing his business, when he lives a lavish lifestyle, he comes to office at 3 pm, finds if everything under control, attend two to three meetings and leaves at 7 pm. when a lot of his wishes are fulfilled. He prefers to relax, his hunger for growth subsides, his madness for growth does not remain intact. He is happy with the media coverage received by him over the several years. He does not feel ready for the second battle and here at this stage the business ceases to be scalable.

Today very few of us believe in making something that lasts long after our life time, that kind of vision which was shown to us by the founder of IBM who has used the letter international before going global is somewhere missing in us. In India the kind of Vision shown to the world by Late Mr.Dhirubhai Ambani, Mr Sunil Bharti Mittal and recently by Retail king Mr Kishore Biyani is something which needs to be learned by other entrepreneurs. The quest for scalability which puts exponential growth above all other priorities need to be learned…….I thinks thats the key to scalability.
